New Romney was one of the original Cinque Ports, and its centre still has the building stock that goes with that: old, low, and much repaired over a long life.

Older roofs need older methods

On historic property the covering is part of the building, and a modern interlocking tile on a roof that has always been peg tile or slate looks wrong and often sits wrong too. Undulating roof lines that have settled over centuries are original, not a defect, and levelling them out is a mistake rather than an improvement.

Where a property warrants it we will price reclaimed or matching materials and tell you what the difference costs. On anything listed or in a conservation area, what you are allowed to use is a real constraint and it is worth establishing before quotes are compared.

Marsh exposure on old buildings

New Romney gets the same open, unbroken wind as the rest of the Marsh, applied to buildings that were put up long before anybody specified a fixing pattern. Old roofs were often held down by weight and friction as much as by nails.

The honest answer on those is usually not a full replacement but a careful strip, inspection and re-fix, keeping the materials and bringing the fixings, underlay and lead up to something that will hold.

Littlestone and Greatstone on the coast

New Romney's seafront is two villages. Littlestone, less than two kilometres east of the town centre, was laid out in the 1880s as a planned resort, and the council's heritage strategy describes its Grand Hotel, a terrace of houses, Marine Parade and the listed 120 foot water tower. It has been a conservation area since 1990. Greatstone runs south along the shore towards Lydd-on-Sea and is much newer, built up mostly in the 1960s and 1970s.

Both sit right on the beach, so salt and wind reach their roofs before anywhere in the old town, and in Littlestone a change of covering is a conservation area question.
