What to do before we get there
Nothing on this list needs a ladder. Do not go onto a roof in bad weather, and do not go into a loft if a ceiling below is bulging.
- Move what you can out from under the leak and put a bucket or a bin under it
- If a ceiling is bulging with trapped water, stand clear and tell us when you call, because that is a collapse risk
- Turn the electricity off at the consumer unit if water is anywhere near a light fitting, a socket or a downlight
- Photograph everything you can safely see, inside and out. Insurers ask for it and it is far easier to take now than later
- Pull furniture and anything absorbent away from the wall below
What we do when we arrive
The first job is making it safe and stopping the water. That often means a temporary cover, a tarpaulin properly fixed rather than weighted down, or taking something loose off the roof before it comes off on its own.
A permanent repair in the dark in a gale is usually the wrong call. We will do it there and then if conditions allow, and otherwise make it watertight, tell you what the proper fix is, and come back and do it in daylight.
Storm damage and insurance
Most home policies cover storm damage but not wear and tear, and which one you are looking at often comes down to the condition the roof was in beforehand. Photographs, the date and a written description of what failed all help.
We will tell you plainly which we think it is. A roof that lost three tiles in a named storm is a different conversation from a roof that was going to fail this winter regardless.
