Why flat roofs fail, and why felt fails first
A flat roof is not actually flat. It is laid to a shallow fall so water runs to an outlet, and almost every flat roof problem starts with water that has stopped doing that. Ponding sits on the covering, works into any weakness, and freezes and expands in winter.
Old pour and roll felt is the covering we are called to most. It goes brittle with age and UV, blisters where moisture is trapped underneath, and splits at the upstands where it has to turn a corner. Once felt is at that stage, patching buys a season rather than fixing anything.
