Sandgate sits between Hythe and Folkestone with the Channel on one side and a steep hill on the other, which makes it a few minutes from our yard and one of the most weather-beaten places we work.

There is no shelter in Sandgate. Properties on the seaward side take salt spray as well as driven rain, and salt is corrosive rather than merely wet: it attacks nails, clips and the zinc coating on fixings long before it does anything to the tile or slate sitting on top of them.
